Tragic Blast at Vedanta Power Plant: FIR Filed Against Chairman Anil Agrawal as Death Toll Reaches 20
In a shocking incident at Vedanta's power plant in Sakti, Chhattisgarh, an FIR has been filed against chairman Anil Agrawal and plant head Devendra Patel following a devastating explosion that has claimed 20 lives. RAIPUR: In a tragic turn of events, Chhattisgarh police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Anil Agrawal, the chairman and founder of Vedanta Resources Ltd, along with Devendra Patel, the head of the Sakti power plant, and several others. This legal action follows a catastrophic explosion on April 14 at the plant, which has now resulted in a rising death toll of 20 individuals, with many others suffering severe injuries.
The FIR was lodged at the Dabhra police station under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 106 (causing death by negligence), 289 (negligent conduct with respect to machinery), and 3(5) (common intention). Sakti Superintendent of Police (SP) Prafull Thakur confirmed that 8 to 10 individuals, including Agrawal and other management officials, have been named in the FIR, with the possibility of more names and charges being added as the investigation unfolds.
The explosion occurred in Singhitarai village when a high-pressure steam tube connected to the boiler-turbine system burst, resulting in severe burns for 36 workers. Of these, 20 have tragically lost their lives, while 16 others are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals.
Preliminary inspections by the industrial safety department have raised alarming concerns about significant lapses in safety protocols and operational negligence by the plant management. Initial findings suggest that the boiler load was abruptly increased from 350 MW to approximately 590 MW in a short time frame, likely destabilizing the system. Investigators are examining several factors that may have contributed to the disaster, including:
- Faults in the primary air fan
- Pressure build-up from unburnt fuel
- Failures in the piping system
- Ineffective emergency response measures
A report from the boiler chief inspector indicates that excessive fuel accumulation within the furnace led to a rapid pressure build-up, ultimately triggering the explosion. The force of the blast was so intense that it displaced a lower pipeline, exacerbating the damage.
According to eyewitness accounts, the pressure within the furnace surged dramatically within one to two seconds around 2:33 PM on the day of the incident, leaving little time for any corrective actions or shutdown procedures.
In response to this tragedy, Sakti SP Praful Thakur has established a special investigation team led by Additional SP Pankaj Patel, which includes SDOP Sumit Gupta, forensic officer Srishti Singh, and Dabhra SHO Rajesh Patel. Authorities are committed to conducting a thorough technical examination, and strict legal actions will be pursued based on the findings of the investigation.
Additionally, Collector Amrit Vikas Topno has mandated a magisterial inquiry, requiring a comprehensive report within 30 days. The incident has sparked significant political backlash, with opposition leaders demanding accountability from Vedanta and a rigorous investigation into the circumstances surrounding one of the deadliest industrial accidents in Chhattisgarh's recent history.
