NSA Ajit Doval Strengthens Ties with Saudi Arabia Amid Energy Supply Concerns

In a significant diplomatic effort, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval visited Saudi Arabia on Sunday, marking a crucial step in India's outreach to key energy suppliers in the wake of recent geopolitical tensions. This visit closely follows External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s trip to the United Arab Emirates and Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri’s engagement in Qatar, underscoring New Delhi's commitment to ensuring uninterrupted energy supplies amidst the ongoing disruptions caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Upon arrival at Riyadh airport, Doval was warmly welcomed by Saudi Deputy Minister for Political Affairs Saud Al-Sati, who previously served as the envoy to India, reflecting the strong diplomatic ties between the two nations. During his visit, Doval held high-level meetings with key Saudi officials, including Energy Minister Abdulaziz bin Salman, Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan, and National Security Advisor Musaed Al-Aiban. The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral relations, addressing regional security issues, and exploring avenues for mutual cooperation.
The Saudi Press Agency reported that Doval and Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan reviewed various areas of collaboration and exchanged views on the latest developments in the region, emphasizing the importance of maintaining stability and security in West Asia.
Saudi Arabia stands as one of India’s top three energy suppliers, alongside Russia and Iraq, making this visit particularly vital for India's energy security strategy. Additionally, the kingdom is home to approximately four million Indians, highlighting the importance of safeguarding the well-being of the Indian diaspora.
In light of the escalating conflict in West Asia, New Delhi has reiterated its call for the unimpeded and safe passage of merchant shipping through critical maritime routes. The Indian government is advocating for a return to dialogue and diplomacy to resolve hostilities, reflecting its commitment to peace and stability in the region.
