Aster CMI Hospital Unveils PEARL: Karnataka's First Pediatric Liver ICU Revolutionizing Critical Care for Children
Bengaluru: Aster CMI Hospital has launched PEARL (Pediatric Emergency and Advanced Response for Liver Care), a groundbreaking Pediatric Liver Intensive Care Unit (ICU) designed to provide specialized care for children with severe liver conditions, marking a significant advancement in pediatric healthcare in Karnataka.
Bengaluru: In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at transforming pediatric critical care, Aster CMI Hospital has proudly announced the launch of PEARL (Pediatric Emergency and Advanced Response for Liver Care), which stands as Karnataka's first dedicated Pediatric Liver Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This innovative unit is meticulously designed to manage children suffering from severe and life-threatening liver conditions, offering a new standard of focused, timely, and highly specialized care in pediatric healthcare.
The inauguration of PEARL was officiated by M Maheshwar Rao (IAS), Chief Commissioner of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), alongside senior leadership and clinical experts from Aster Hospitals, highlighting the collaborative effort to enhance healthcare services for children in the region.
The launch of PEARL signifies a paradigm shift in pediatric healthcare, transitioning from generalized ICU care to a specialized liver-centric model tailored specifically for the unique needs of children. Pediatric liver emergencies can escalate rapidly, leading to severe complications such as brain swelling, infections, organ failure, and metabolic disturbances. Addressing these complexities necessitates a coordinated, specialist-led approach centered on liver health.
Equipped with state-of-the-art monitoring systems, PEARL is supported by a multidisciplinary team of pediatric hepatologists, liver transplant surgeons, intensivists, anesthetists, infectious disease specialists, and specially trained liver ICU nurses. This collaborative approach enables rapid response, precision care, and continuous monitoring during critical moments, ensuring that children receive the best possible care when they need it most.
Prof. (Dr.) N. Karthik Nagesh, Program Director of Pediatric Centre’s of Excellence at Aster CMI Hospital, emphasized the importance of timely intervention in pediatric liver emergencies, stating, “In pediatric liver emergencies, every minute is crucial. With PEARL, we can initiate early, targeted interventions and provide continuous, liver-focused critical care tailored specifically for children. This approach significantly improves clinical outcomes and, in some cases, supports recovery without the need for liver transplantation.”
Dr. Sonal Asthana, Program Director of Hepatobiliary Surgery and Multiorgan Transplantation at Aster CMI Hospital, added, “The Aster Integrated Liver Care Team is Karnataka’s largest liver care and transplant provider, treating over 7,000 patients with liver disease annually. Our team performs more than 100 liver transplantation procedures each year in Bangalore, with a significant number dedicated to pediatric liver failure. Many children from economically disadvantaged families receive lifesaving transplants through our innovative affordable liver transplant program. The establishment of a dedicated Pediatric liver ICU underscores our commitment to providing world-class interdisciplinary care for these critically ill children.”
Dr. Prashanth N, CEO of Aster Hospitals in Karnataka, remarked, “The launch of PEARL reflects our commitment to redefining pediatric critical care. By establishing a dedicated liver ICU backed by expert multidisciplinary teams, we are enhancing our ability to deliver timely, specialized, and comprehensive care for critically ill children, while setting new benchmarks in pediatric healthcare.”
Unlike conventional ICUs, PEARL is uniquely structured around the specific needs of children with liver failure. This ensures that every aspect of care—from monitoring and medication to intervention protocols—is precisely aligned with pediatric requirements. This focused approach facilitates early detection, faster intervention, and improved recovery outcomes, potentially avoiding the need for transplantation in some cases. Furthermore, the unit emphasizes family-centered care, providing clear communication, emotional support, and guidance to families during these critical times.
With the launch of PEARL, Aster CMI Hospital is reshaping the pediatric healthcare landscape by introducing a dedicated, highly specialized liver care ecosystem that combines clinical expertise, advanced technology, and compassionate care, ultimately improving outcomes for children across the region. This initiative not only enhances the quality of care available but also sets a new standard for pediatric liver health management in Karnataka.
